Södertalje sluss JSB-1

The expansion of the largest lock in Scandinavia, in the Södertälje Canal is fundamental to be able to meet the continuous growth of marine traffic (both in volume and ship dimensions). The renewal project will ultimately result in an extension of the lock chamber (170 metres in length and 25.3 metres in width), the construction of two new sluice heads including lock gates and a new bascule bridge.

The customer encountered an existing cofferdam made of sheet piling, which is why they wanted to install a bridge. The bridge needed to be horizontally movable to conduct pull tests on already installed anchors. Additionally, they wanted to use the bridge for minor excavation work, requiring a small excavator to be positioned on the bridge.

We have presented our solution with an exiting bridge of 24 meter long and 3,5 meter wide. In our workshop we have provided special hatches in the bridge deck and the client has installed our bridge on a construction with special load moving rollers, to move the bridge horizontally over the sheetpiles.
Client is very happy with the presented solution. The bridge can be moved easily and the solution could be rented from an exiting stock. Also this bridge can de re-used after the project, resulting in a lower carbon footprint for the project.

In our calculations we have designed the bridge, we have checked the maximum deformation during testing, the friction forces of the bridge on the load moving rollers of the client and the use of the bridge by a 16,5 tons excavator and the test unit of 16 tons
