Temporary construction bridge for urban development in Wiltz

In Wiltz, Luxembourg, the “Wunne mat der Wooltz” project is transforming a former industrial site into a new, sustainable urban district. This large-scale development requires significant construction and transport movements over several years. To safely route this traffic through the construction area and reduce traffic pressure on the centre of Wiltz, a new temporary crossing over the River Wooltz was required.

Janson Bridging Belgium was commissioned to provide the engineering, supply, assembly and installation of a temporary modular construction bridge, taking into account the complex ground conditions of the former industrial site.

The challenge

Construction traffic and suppliers need to move efficiently between the different work zones. Without an additional connection, some of this traffic would have to use the existing road network and travel through the centre of Wiltz. This would result in additional traffic movements, disruption to the surrounding area and more complex construction logistics.

A new temporary road connection was therefore required between Rue des Sports and Rue Charles Lambert. The bridge had to be suitable for intensive construction and heavy goods traffic, quick to install and reusable after completion of its deployment.

Our solution

Janson Bridging Belgium installed a modular JSB-2 road bridge approximately 31.5 metres long and 5 metres wide in total.

The bridge consists of two parallel bridge sections, each 2.5 metres wide. Each section is made up of three modular elements measuring 10.5 metres in length. These elements were assembled on site and connected with bolted joints to form one complete road bridge.

The outer sides of the bridge are fitted with vehicle restraint barriers. In addition, provisions have been installed underneath the bridge for routing cables and utility lines.

Thanks to the modular system, the bridge could be transported efficiently and quickly assembled on site. At the end of its deployment, the bridge can be dismantled and its modular components reused at another location.

The application

The temporary bridge provides a new and important logistical connection within the Wunne mat der Wooltz project. Construction and delivery traffic can travel directly through the project area without adding extra construction traffic to the centre of Wiltz.

This helps separate construction traffic from local traffic, improves access to the different work zones and minimises traffic disruption and inconvenience for residents and other road users. At the same time, the temporary connection contributes to the safe and efficient management of construction logistics.

The demountable and reusable JSB-2 also fits well with the project’s circular ambitions. At the end of its deployment, the bridge can be dismantled and reused at another location. In this way, temporary modular infrastructure provides a flexible and sustainable solution for long-term construction projects.
