90-Metre FRP Cycle Bridge Kockelscheuer

In Kockelscheuer, Luxembourg, a new composite cycle and pedestrian bridge has been constructed as part of the further development of the local cycling infrastructure. The route passes through a green and environmentally sensitive area. This required a sustainable bridge solution that provides a safe connection while minimising the impact on the surrounding environment.

The solution

For this project, Janson Bridging Belgium supplied six prefabricated FRP bridge elements. Each element is approximately 15 metres long and 4 metres wide. Combined, the elements form a composite bridge approximately 90 metres long for cyclists and pedestrians.

The bridge sections are supported at various points by concrete supports. The low self-weight of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) enables efficient transportation and rapid installation. The prefabricated elements could be lifted into their final position using a mobile crane.

Janson Bridging Belgium was responsible for the technical drawings, structural calculations and supply of the bridge elements.

The improvement

The new cycle bridge provides a safe, comfortable and future-proof connection. FRP is corrosion-resistant, requires little maintenance and offers a long service life. This makes composite an attractive alternative to traditional bridge structures made of steel, timber or concrete.

This project also demonstrates the excellent scalability of a prefabricated composite bridge. By combining multiple elements, longer cycle and pedestrian connections can be realised efficiently.

A sustainable bridge solution combining a long service life, rapid installation, low maintenance requirements and minimal impact on the surrounding environment.
